AU BACKGROUND:
Dave Strider was born to two very conservative parents in the great southern city of Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, due to a strange mutation, his mother was suddenly the proud parent of not one but two Daves after she held him in her arms for the first time. Shocked and very uncertain, their parents were ready to dispose of them in the 'proper manner' -- but then two different people both stepped up to take responsibility of the infant mutants. Their older brother, known mostly as "Bro," and Charles Xavier both went out of their way to navigate the legal system in order to assure that Dave and his clone twin would be cared for. With Xavier's help, Bro was set up as their legal guardian and moved to a quiet suburb of the city. Xavier even offered to have them moved to the Institute, but Bro declined; Houston was their home, and they would remain there no matter what. Instead, Charles set himself up as a biannual visitor to their home, to make sure that Dave and David were never uncomfortable, as well as growing up properly.

As a child, Dave and David spent a lot of time indoors -- moreso Dave than his twin, but of course, Bro was never partial to one or the other. Dave learned at an early age that the best way to avoid any unfortunate cloning accidents was to wear wildly inappropriate clothing at all times. So of course, he started collecting winter gear -- hats, scarves, gloves, jackets, anything you could find. This allowed him to at least go out and play, if not have a relatively social life…just minus all those strange physical human interactions. But when he was still very small (about four or five), things changed…pretty drastically. David, while they were out playing one day, was kidnapped and taken away before Dave could find Bro and do anything about it. Searches proved fruitless; David was nowhere to be found. Assured by Xavier that they would keep an eye out for Dave's twin/clone, there was really nothing more they could do -- and so Dave stopped going outside as often, holing up in his room and turning to books and the internet for entertainment. His life, after the kidnapping, was pretty uneventful -- if you count a missing member of what you considered to be your family normal, at least. It was years before they found him again, and during that time Dave turned to trying to make a life on the internet rather than going out and making friends. He developed quite an "internet persona," maintaining a lot of social networking sites and ironic comics in an attempt to gain some sort of notoriety. Mostly his work…well it sucks. But at least it sucks in such a way that he gets popularity for it sucking so much. It's "ironic."

Several years later, at around the age of ten, Charles Xavier discovered the whereabouts of a secret laboratory where children were being experimented on in order to develop new, purposeful mutations based on animal genes. When Bro and Dave came with the force designed to break into the facility, they found David -- but he was not exactly as he was before. Instead of a human child, he was part bird, with wings and crow feet, as well as claws. Not that it really mattered to Dave; the two of them refused to let go of each other so adamantly that they had to be carried out of the facility. They spent most of the rest of their teenage years pretty much becoming internet superstars and hobos -- since David obviously couldn't go outside due to his new wings and feet, Dave was content to stay inside as well. Bro was concerned of course - what kind of teenage boys want to sit around in the half-dark all day? - but wasn't entirely sure what to do.

Finally, at about the age of fifteen, Dave and David were told by Bro that there was a country in which people who were like them could stay. They wouldn't be discriminated against - no one would make fun of David or try to kill him for having wings and the mannerisms of a bird - and there was even a school, a specialized school for mutants that could possibly teach Dave how to control his slightly wild power. They both agreed almost instantly, mostly for one another -- Dave wanted David to be able to go out and have a life that he would enjoy without being discriminated against, and David wanted Dave to be able to enjoy being somewhat of a "normal" person for a bit. With Bro in tow, the family moved to Genosha, took up residence, and the Striders began going to school.

While at Genosha, not much has happened; a lot of school things. Dave met David's long-time best friend, Jade English, as well as John Egbert and a few other people. Dave still maintains his online persona and enjoys awkwardly talking to Emma Frost in order to try to get her to like him, which is utterly a lost cause. Completely lost. Thankfully he knows this, and isn't devastated.

PERSONALITY:
Dave is a coolass motherfucker.

Or at least, that’s what he appears to be -- he’s the master of stoic looks and having everything under control. Trained from practically infancy to deal with things in a suave and almost cold-hearted manner, Dave can remove himself from a situation in a way that no normal thirteen year old should be able to. He detaches himself from the emotions of others, trusting no one for longer than he has to. Dave’s primary motivation is to stay cool: if no one can tell what he’s thinking, then he can perpetually confuse and stay ahead of other people. His passive, almost monotonous face is a way to hide the emotions that go through his mind, and it’s his first coping mechanism. When all else, fails, hide everything behind a mask and let no one know what you feel.

So on the outside, he’s cocky as hell -- 150% sure of himself, and because Dave Strider is the coolest boy you’ll ever meet, he is the only person on earth who could go above 100% and actually be inside of the laws of percentage. He can be an asshole about it, often subtly hinting at just the fact that he is cooler than you, though of course never saying it outright because cool kids don’t do that. Dave is quick to pick on little flaws and not one to hide what he thinks, telling John that he’s kind of an idiot and shrugging off Rose’s attempts to undermine his masculinity with the casual air of someone who has all the swag in the world. Dave is forgetful and slightly erratic, doing things and then forgetting that he’s done them (though sometimes, he takes it upon himself to remember -- he’s not a complete douchebag, just mostly one). This sort of thing gets him in trouble sometimes, because he often forgets important things, but he doesn't seem to care, either outwardly or inwardly.

He likes to do things for the irony, but….mostly, the things that he and his brother deem ironic are just kind of weird. For example, the numerous shitty comics that Dave makes and then maintains ironically on a bunch of different websites. Something about the Striders is just a little bit...off. Dave’s sense of right and wrong is skewed by a perpetual need to be cool, to be the person who people look up to but who, in reality, could give less fucks about how many friends or fans that he has. He wants to be seen as some sort of amazing person who can manage everything and not mess up his hair, so to speak. This sort of behavior, of course, does not…really endear him to people who he doesn't want to be endearing at all. He wants to be seen as cool, but it comes off sometimes as 'douche'. So a lot of his interests tend toward the obscure and slightly off the wall: he listens to bands you’ve certainly never heard of, and collects dead things preserved in jars. These things are "cool", things that he can wave around and have people respect and slightly alienate him for. Which is what a cool kid always wants, after all. Cool kids aren’t the people with the swarms of friends. They are the kids who stand away from the crowd that everyone secretly admires but is too afraid to talk to.

But really, the things that Dave holds back behind his poker face are things that should be talked about. He never mentions it to most people, Dave really does idolize both of his brothers. He takes after his older brother, picking up interests from him (such as music -- turntables and rap especially) and following in his footsteps with an almost reverent air. And with Davesprite, he likes to simply..well, just be himself sometimes. He hides his devotion (and what some may even call love) behind a wall of uncaring words. Pushing off his feelings is the easiest way to deal with the ones that he can’t handle thinking about, like sadness and anger. If he can push them off and pretend that they don’t exist, then they won’t -- it’s as simple as that. Though usually, this comes back to haunt him, since he almost never means the cruel words that he thinks up. However, there is one person who he is almost entirely honest with: Davesprite. Because they were once the same person (but aren't any longer) he tends to be more upfront with him, letting him know how he really feels -- and in the AU, how strongly he feels it. He’s no robot; Dave probably feels anger more readily than any of his friends, often the one to spring into action before thinking about the outcome. He can be headstrong and proud to the point that he ends up alienating his friends -- some of the most important people in the world to him. In fact, he isn’t that good at controlling his resentment at all: he lashes out at Terezi when she tries to talk to him after Bro’s death in canon, and would do it again at someone if they were interrupting his private moments to be just a boy. Dave is a kid who would deal justice out readily for the people he loves most. It takes a strong-willed person to break into his heart, but once he decides you’re worth keeping around it doesn’t take much to get him to fight for you. He'll keep you around forever, call you a bro and a best friend, and be at your side for life.

Dave never considers himself a hero -- he’s too brash, angry and proud to be the person that people to. He's also pretty self-conscious, and would never consider himself someone who could lead other people either…but he wishes he could have the chance to become one of those people. He considers the real heroes to be the people that he looks up to -- his Bro, Davesprite, and even John, the derpy best friend that always believes in the good of others, even when it gets him killed. For someone who tends to advertise himself as the coolest kid in the Incipisphere, Dave almost never considers himself to be the best there is. He’s jealous of everyone -- from the normal humans he wanted to be to the people he calls his best friends. Dave just can’t be good enough, in his mind. He’s always working to get better, to be the person he thinks he should be. But it’s never enough; he’s almost never satisfied with the results of his own handiwork, and refuses to consider himself a hero, a knight, or anything of the sort. Especially in the AU, he has a decent case of self-deprecation; he has been considered an outcast from society for his entire life and never thinks that he can be anything better than some hermit bum who spends his entire life on the internet trying to please people with comics. He’s just Dave -- someone who needs his own hero to look up to, but also needs someone to continually reassure him that he’s doing the right thing. He craves attention, even though he can't actually be touched.. It reassures him, when people like what he does, be it comics or music or just being himself. He needs that sort of support, and it helps him feel slightly better, though Dave rarely believes it himself. This is why friends like Jade are so important -- they make him feel better about himself for at least a few minutes. And who knows, maybe they really do think he's cool on some level.

Even if he doesn’t consider himself to be a good guy -- cool kids aren’t good, they’re bad as fuck and have an attitude to go with it -- Dave will willingly throw himself in front of danger for his friends. While he might not deserve all the praise and attention he gets, they certainly do. And he’ll make sure that anyone who tries to hurt them is beaten up or just simply made fun of in an ironic comic before anything else. Though he never expects thanks, or expects them to know -- Dave will just do, without thought to the consequences, especially when it involves his friends and family. In canon he literally sacrifices his own life in order to save theirs, several times over. And he does it without even complaining all that much, willingly letting himself get killed so that his friends won’t have to. He has a desire to protect his friends, even if they think he’s an insufferable prick who’s full of himself. They mean a lot to him, even if Dave can’t really admit it.

APPEARANCE: Dave has orange hair -- carrot-like, if you will -- which matches his twin's. In addition, he has eyes that are a brilliant shade of red, which he keeps carefully concealed behind a pair of shades at almost all times. Other than that, he looks like a normal human; a pale human, but nothing that can't be fixed with some time outside. He tends to wear a lot of winter weather clothing, even in the middle of summer; at least one scarf and gloves, if not more -- this is to keep him from accidentally making clone babies with anyone he meets on the sidewalk.

POWERS: Asexual Reproduction: Dave can produce…well, new Daves. Whenever he touches another human being, he can physically create a new copy of himself that has some of the physical attributes of the person that helped to create the clone. (For example: Jade and Dave would produce a red-eyed, black-haired kid with some awkward-looking buckteeth, or something of that nature.) Depending on how hard he is concentrating and how neutral his mood is, he can create either a single, long-lasting clone or several clones that all die very quickly. The catch is: they all die eventually. Well, not really die: they turn into dust and then can be reabsorbed by Dave himself. But they still kind of awkwardly fall on the ground before they do that because…they're Dave. The harder that he concentrates, the longer they stay alive -- and they can stay alive for up to years if he really thinks about it. Like…Davesprite.

In addition, Davesprite and Dave share a mind link -- this is present in every twin iteration, although the clones tend not to stay around long enough to develop any sort of personal connection. However with the two Daves, they enjoy sharing both thoughts and emotions with one another. The link can stretch for at least a mile without being broken -- and can be expanded with practice and time.
